Kate Sebes is a Minnesota-based artist, performer, and creative professional whose background spans dance, arts administration, and nonprofit development. As Creative Design Manager for ARENA DANCES, Sebes brings a multidisciplinary perspective shaped by her experience as both an artist and arts administrator, creating visual communications that support the company's creative vision.

Laura Selle Virtucio | Rehearsal Director
Laura Selle Virtucio has maintained a vibrant 25+ year performance career in the Twin Cities and toured nationally with several companies, most recently continuing her long history with Shapiro & Smith Dance as performer and Artistic Associate, as well as creating new works with Mathew Janczewski and Chris Schlichting. Laura has graced several of the nation's stages including the Joyce Theater, Danspace at St. Mark’s Church, the Guthrie, and Walker Art Center. She was a long-time company member with Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater, Zenon Dance Company, and Black Label Movement. With Shapiro & Smith Dance, she consistently restages the company's repertory across the country from Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company to Boston Conservatory and Carleton College in MN. She received a 2007 McKnight Fellowship for Dancers and a Minnesota Sage Award for Performance. Laura is a senior teaching specialist at the University of Minnesota and director of University Dance Theatre.

Nieya Amezquita
Nieya Amezquita
Choreographer, performer, and founder of Amez Dance, exploring the connection between movement and psychology. Nieya Amezquita is a Minnesota-based artist currently working as a company member with Arena Dances, Black Label Movement and Corpus Dance Works. She has also performed with Threads Dance Project, Rhythmically Speaking, Elayna Waxse Movement Projects, Concerto Dance, Off-Leash Area, and Doma Dance Theater. In 2019, Nieya earned a Bachelors in Dance and Psychology from the University of Georgia. During undergrad she had the opportunity to perform nationally and internationally with founding company CADE:NCE before studying in Portugal with the Addo Platform where her passion for choreography was ignited. She discovered the perfect merge of her two fields of interest: using dance as an artistic medium to explore, understand and discuss human psychological concepts. Now Nieya’s work has been presented in the Blackness Is Arts festival produced by the Guthrie Theater, the CandyBox festival produced by Arena Dances, commissioned by Threads Dance Project, Rhythmically Speaking, Alternative Motion Project and Ballet Co’Laboratory. In 2023, Nieya furthered her professional development by founding and leading Amez Dance, a project-based dance company committed to cultivating reflective and reparative experiences through movement. Nieya strives to participate in works that not only create a space where authenticity is celebrated but deeply understood.

Alex Arce is an Ecuadorian American artist born and raised in Minnesota has been dancing since the age of 5 culturally and socially as well as technically. He focuses his practice within the street dance and Latin diaspora dance forms as well as contemporary/Modern Dance. He is a graduate of Larkin Dance Studio and Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Upon his high school training he has also been a part of a pre professional dance program known as the Cli Conservatory in Massachusetts where he got to learn from different choreographers all around the world and further pursue his career as a movement artist, choreographer, and educator. After graduating from this program, Alex was accepted as a member of the Cli Company, working as both a choreographer and instructor with Cli Studios. Most recently he has focused his career in collaboration with other companies such as Meridians movement company and Black Label Movement where he has got the opportunity to further develop his craft and continue his love for creation and performance. Currently, Alex works as a Freelance Artist, Teacher, and Company Member.

Sage Award nominee and McKnight Dancer Fellow performing nationally in modern, postmodern, and performance art spaces. Non Edwards is a dancer, choreographer, and GYROKINESIS® Method trainer, located in the Twin Cities since 2009. Working across a range of style and genre, Non performs modern, postmodern, improvisation and performance art in galleries, theaters, videos, and DIY and public spaces including the Seattle Art Fair, Walker Art Center, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Jacob’s Pillow, and Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Non is an Outstanding Performer Sage Award nominee, and a McKnight Dancer Fellow. Sarah McCullough (she/her) is a Minneapolis-based dance artist and educator in contemporary forms. She is a highly collaborative artist who is passionate about aliveness in performance, and seeks to perform emotionally resonant works that center humanity, vulnerability, and play.
Originally from Virginia, Sarah attended James Madison University as a Madison Achievement Scholar, and earned her BA in Dance and Mathematics. Since moving to Minneapolis in 2018, she has enjoyed a vibrant and dynamic dance career, having performed with companies ARENA DANCES and Black Label Movement, and in projects by choreographers Elayna Waxse, Taja Will, Alexandra Bodnarchuk, Berit Ahlgren, Helen Hatch, Zoë Koenig, and more. With roots established in Minnesota, Sarah began working with VA/NYC-based company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance as a collaborating dance artist in 2024. She is currently a member of ARENA DANCES, a repertory company led by Mathew Janczewski.
Sarah has recently led contemporary classes at The Arena, Hothouse Studios, Zenon Dance School, and Minnesota Dance Theater. Sarah has offered workshops at the Limón/Black Label Twin Cities Intensive, ARENA DANCES’ Instinct Intensive, The University of Winchester (UK), North Carolina State University, and several high school dance programs throughout the Twin Cities. She is also a 200-hour accredited yoga teacher and offers a holistic approach to mindful movement as a personal and artistic practice.

Versatile performer and educator with deep roots in the Twin Cities dance community. Jake Nehrbassgrew up in Minneapolis and started his dance journey when he was three years old. Over the years, he has had the privilege of studying and performing various styles, including tap, modern, jazz, hip hop, international styles, and ballroom. Jake earned his BA in Dance and Exercise Science from St. Olaf College, which has allowed him to explore the physical and anatomical aspects of movement. His work as a performing artist, choreographer, and teacher in the Twin Cities is deeply rooted in a love for the art form and a desire to share it with others. Currently, Jake dances with ARENA Dances, Black Label Movement, Ruby Josephine Dance Theatre, and Rhythmically Speaking and has had or continues to collaborate with several wonderful local companies, including Contempo Physical Dance, Mixtape, Threads Dance Project, Flying Foot Forum, Hatch Dance/Honey Works, Katha Dance Theatre, Cheng “Technica” Xiong, Buckets and Taps, Eau Claire Dance, STRONGmovement, and in Stephan Koplowitz’s Northfield Experience. He is grateful for each of these experiences, which have allowed him to grow as an artist and connect with talented individuals in the community. In addition to performing and choreographing, Jake enjoys teaching at Prairie School of Dance and Ballare Teatro Performing Arts Center.

Steve has been a lifelong supporter of the Arts and ARENA DANES in particular. A retired educator, Steve was the principal of Ramsey Fine Arts Center, where they launched the “Learning Through Music” program in collaboration with New England Conservatory, followed by Field School in Minneapolis. In addition, he has served in school administrative positions internationally in Saudi Arabia and Guatemala. He is a former board member and executive director of the Minnesota Middle School Association (MMSA) and served on the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) board of trustees. In addition to serving on the board for ARENA DANCES, Steve also serves on the AMLE Foundation Committee.

Marisa Baker, Board Member | Daily Harvest
Marisa graduated from Duke University with a major in Public Policy and a minor in Dance. After spending some time in Boston working in consulting, she now resides in New York City and works in strategic analytics for Daily Harvest, extracting insights from data to enable others to make more data-driven decisions. Marisa has been dancing since the age of 3 and today continues to dance recreationally whenever possible. She also enjoys volunteering for arts organizations, leveraging analytics to assist organizations in achieving their goals, and is excited to be contributing her time to ARENA DANCES.

Betsy Maloney, PhD, MFA, is an assistant professor in the Arts in Education program at the University of Minnesota, where she works with the interarts (visual art, dance, theatre arts) license program and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the department of curriculum and instruction. In addition, Maloney Leaf also serves as Associate Director for Arts Education with the Center for Climate Literacy, where she participates in community engagement and research experiences to better understand the connection between arts education and a climate future. She holds a MN K-12 dance and theatre teaching license.

Kelli Miles is a Minneapolis-based dancer and creative space strategist with a passion for expanding opportunities for artists both on and off the stage. As the Consulting Manager at Artspace Projects - the nation's leading nonprofit developer and consultant of affordable space for artists - she helps communities across the country plan and advance arts and cultural development projects. Kelli earned her BFA in Dance with a minor in Leadership from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities and has performed with several local companies, including ARENA DANCES, Rhythmically Speaking, Hatch Dance, HoneyWorks, Black Label Movement, and Threads Dance Project.

Always a dancer. Always a performance/performing arts creator. Now a patron and a very (very) active audience member, Ricardo Torres-Rivera (he/his) is a Puerto Rican gay man who today calls Minnesota home. Since a teenager, Ricardo has been training in various dance, body/space awareness, and performing art forms, including site-specific, voice as a driving force of movement (healing voice), experimental, Alexander Technique, classical ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, contact improvisation, and mask theater. He has participated in classes and workshops with Myrna Renaud, Viveca Vázquez, Waldo Gonzalez, Deborah Hunt, Ñequi González, Olaya Muentes, and Vanessa Ortiz. Ricardo was part of the Cowles Center Programs and Education Advisory Committee. Ricardo is committed to ensuring that the voices of BIPOC, LGBTQIA2+, Latinx, and especially the diverse and polyphonic voices of dance artists from the Caribbean are represented and heard. Professionally, Ricardo is an entrepreneur and owner of Xevalics Consulting, a technology consulting company in the life sciences industry.

Elliana Vesely is a Twin Cities, MN-based dance artist who grew up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin. As of May of 2020, she holds a B.A. in dance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She complemented this degree with studies in biology and health & wellness promotion, receiving minors in both. While at the U of M, Elliana was humbled to be cast in works by acclaimed artists; Leah Nelson, Joan Smith, Robert Moses, Eko Supriyanto, Kjara Wurst, and Carl Flink. While in school, she also had the pleasure of working with Crash Dance Company & Shapiro and Smith Dance (S&S) and performed in the 2018 North-Central American College Dance Association Gala. Elliana is honored to have been a recipient of the Beth Hope Suran Scholarship (2016-2020) and the Jean Congdon Scholarship (2019-2020). She is ecstatic to be dancing with Shapiro and Smith Dance, Black Label Movement, and ARENA DANCES as a company member. Catherine has worked as a real estate developer on mixed-use, transit-oriented, urban infill developments with a focus on a triple-bottom-line investment approach that incorporates environmental, social, and economic goals. In 2017, she founded her own practice with the aim of positively impacting our built environment through a creative, cross-disciplinary practice. Design excellence, resiliency planning, and innovation are common threads in her past projects throughout the U.S. She completed her undergraduate work magna cum laude in History & Literature at Harvard and holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from Princeton University.

Gustave Mutombo is a graduate of St. Thomas University with an MBA from Hamline. His career in corporate banking and finance has led him to his current role as a Legal Financial Analyst with Best Buy. His commitment to service was instilled by his education and through his work with Project for Pride in Living, coupled with his desire to expand his horizons, led him to Board service with ARENA for six years.
